What if there was another way to manage your SLEEP APNOEA?
Doctors in Australia are studying an investigational device to treat sleep apnoea
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is a common and serious sleep disorder in which breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep. OSA is not only disruptive to your life and that of your partner, but it also has many other health implications, such as higher risk of cardiovascular diseases.
While many people use continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines to manage their OSA, some may be intolerant or unable to use CPAP and need an alternative.
Right now, doctors at select centres in Australia are conducting a clinical study for a potential new treatment for sleep apnoea. The study is for the XII Medical HGNS System – an investigational device designed to keep the airway open during the night without hoses or masks.
What is the XII Medical HGNS System?
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) occurs when the tongue falls backwards into the throat during sleep, blocking the airway as you breathe in. The hypoglossal nerve controls the tongue and airway muscles.
The XII Medical HGNS System is an investigational device designed to stimulate the hypoglossal nerve to keep the airway open throughout the night. The HGNS System uses a small implanted device called a neurostimulator that is implanted under the chin through a minimally-invasive surgical procedure.
When you go to sleep, the neurostimulator is wirelessly powered. This nerve stimulation results in a small forward movement of the tongue muscles to help keep the airway open during sleep. There are no external hoses, noise, or machinery. In addition, a bedside tablet and app allows you to turn therapy on and off, and to adjust stimulation strength as needed.
The XII Medical HGNS System is currently being offered at select centres in Australia through a new clinical study. If you qualify and choose to participate, the HGNS procedure and all study-related care will be covered.
